Horse Fence Safety
We are proud of ElectroBraid's outstanding safety record.
Our Company Mission is to build safe fences for horses. We listen carefully to our customers and we act on their suggestions and advice.
Many prominent equine vets say ElectroBraid® is one of the safest fences for horses. At least 50,000 horses are now fenced behind ElectroBraid®. According to independent market research, 99% of all ElectroBraid® customers recommend ElectroBraid® to their friends.
The ElectroBraid® Fence System is designed to minimize injuries and secure horses safely. There are no sharp points or hard edges, no boards to break or splinter. Most severe fence injuries happen when a horse panics or is chased by another horse and runs 'blind' into a rigid fence. ElectroBraid® is a forgiving fence because it is resilient, like a boxing ring. ElectroBraid® tends to bounce the horse right back with little harm to horse or fence!
ElectroBraid® is a psychological barrier. We advise our customers to always maintain at least 5,000 volts and good electrical grounding to ensure their horses receive a significant electric shock - - not just a 'bee-sting'. A shock from an approved electric fence energizer is not harmful because it's set at a low amperage for just a tiny fraction of a second, similar to the duration of a static shock from your TV set. A UL or CSA-approved energizer won't harm a two-year-old child or a newborn foal.
Injuries with ElectroBraid® are very rare. If any incident occurs, please call so we can discuss how best to prevent a repetition.
To keep your horses safe, use good horse sense:
- Know your horses and recognize the limitations of your property.
- Don't turn off your fence energizer to save electricity. The cost of electricity for a fence energizer is the same as a 100-watt light bulb.
- Regularly inspect your fence to ensure ElectroBraid® is taut and properly electrified.
- Take particular care to make sure your fence is well grounded. 95% of all electric fence problems are due to poor grounding. Check your installation manual on our website, or call us for advice.
- Use a hot-cold system - - meaning ground the second-from-the-top-strand of ElectroBraid®. (check manual)
- Separate stallions from other horses by using a laneway. Do not rely on just a single fence line.
- If your horses are inclined to roll close to your fence, provide a sandy area well removed for them to roll.
- Always introduce a horse to a new pasture. For your own safety, turn the fence energizer OFF so the horse you are leading won’t get accidentally shocked and bolt. Lead the horse around the fence perimeter. Once the horse understands the boundaries of its new pasture, release the horse and turn the energizer back ON.
- Prevent your horses from accidental electric shocks by avoiding placing water troughs close to your electric fence, hanging grain pails on your fence posts, or leaving hay near your electric fence.
- Install your ElectroBraid® fence as recommended with 3 or more strands of ElectroBraid®
- ElectroBraid® is engineered for your horses' safety. Don't take shortcuts.
- Please ensure their care and maintain your fences.
